Welcome

Welcome to the Brownsville Elementary School art blog. We hope you enjoy exploring the art gallery created by the students in grades Preschool - 5th. The art projects we do with our students allows everyone to experience art through different mediums...

DRAWING

pencils, pens, crayons, markers and colored pencils

~Students start out in the lower grades learning how to draw animals using shapes. Then in the upper grades they learn proportions of the human face and figure. Then they learn how to shade and add value to make their drawings look realistic.

PAINTING

watercolors and tempera paint

~Students start with painting in Kindergarten and build on these skills all throughout elementary school. They learn how to properly use the paints and take care of the brushes.

SCULPTING

clay, wood, wire and found objects

~Clay is a favorite medium in all grades. Each year our clay projects build on each other so that by the time you are in 5th grade you use all the skills to create your sculpture. Kindergarten also uses found object to make faces. Second grade also uses wood to make Kachina Dolls and 4th also uses wire to create wire figures.

PLUS A FEW EXTRAS

print making, weaving and stitchery

~We print in many ways but mostly in 2nd grade, in 3rd grade we love to weave and in 4th (or 5th) we learn stitchery.

All of our students get to be in the studio for 45 mins. a week but they are constantly creating throughout every day.

Artfully yours!
your art teachers, Shannon Horridge and Tetyana Wittkowski

Why Art?

Hello Brownsville Artists! I hope you have discovered your creative side this summer and that you are feeling hopeful for the upcoming school year. Even though it will be very different than any school year any of us have ever started we will all work together to stay connected and responsive to everyone's needs. Being creative is more important now than ever and I hope you will join me in thinking we can use art to help each other through this unique time in all of our lives.

Creativity At It's Best!

These two use their creativity in a fun and exciting way! Thinking outside the box and painting household items (with parent's permission) is a fun way to express yourself. Love these eggs, boys!

The Sun is Finally OUT!

Wow! It has been a long time since the sun has been out and boy am I grateful to see it's warm light. During this stay home time it is very important to feed your soul and keep the creativity flowing... some of our BES students have been doing just that and not everyone has been using paper, pencil, crayons and/or glue. Being creative is more than having to buy supplies and use them. One can be creative with dance, music and/or found objects around the house or in nature. Here is an image created by Stella, one of our 4th grade students...

Nice job, Stella and thank you for sharing!

Stay Creative and Healthy

As we start the stay home part of our school year please know that we can take this time to focus on our creative side. Use this time to reset and remember what is truly important. Take time to look and really see what is right in front of you... and if you feel so inclined to draw, sculpt, write, sing, or dance then do it.
