Welcome

Welcome to the Brownsville Elementary School art blog. We hope you enjoy exploring the art gallery created by the students in grades Preschool - 5th. The art projects we do with our students allows everyone to experience art through different mediums...

DRAWING

pencils, pens, crayons, markers and colored pencils

~Students start out in the lower grades learning how to draw animals using shapes. Then in the upper grades they learn proportions of the human face and figure. Then they learn how to shade and add value to make their drawings look realistic.

PAINTING

watercolors and tempera paint

~Students start with painting in Kindergarten and build on these skills all throughout elementary school. They learn how to properly use the paints and take care of the brushes.

SCULPTING

clay, wood, wire and found objects

~Clay is a favorite medium in all grades. Each year our clay projects build on each other so that by the time you are in 5th grade you use all the skills to create your sculpture. Kindergarten also uses found object to make faces. Second grade also uses wood to make Kachina Dolls and 4th also uses wire to create wire figures.

PLUS A FEW EXTRAS

print making, weaving and stitchery

~We print in many ways but mostly in 2nd grade, in 3rd grade we love to weave and in 4th (or 5th) we learn stitchery.

All of our students get to be in the studio for 45 mins. a week but they are constantly creating throughout every day.

Artfully yours!

Square 1 Art 2014

So you may have heard (or not) your child talk about Square 1 Art and maybe you were thinking what in the world are they talking about? Well, I'm here to explain what's coming up this fall and what Square 1 Art has to do with Brownsville students.

Square 1 Art (S1A) is a FUNdraising event we do here at Brownsville to help support our Art Program. Each student is creating an original piece of art which we will be sending into the S1A headquarters. At the S1A headquarters they will put each piece of artwork into their database. Once all is complete they will send us all the individual order forms and each child's art work printed into a sheet of free stickers which you will be able to keep. We will then pass them out to each student for them to bring home around the 1st week of November. You will then go online or fill out the paper order with items you would like to purchase with your child's art work on it. Then they fill the orders and send them to school were we will pass them to each customer and they will bring them home. We do this during this time of year so that if you are looking for that special gift for a special someone these will be ready before the holidays. If you would like more information about S1A please go online at www.Square1art.com to check it out!

The students have been working hard to create masterpieces...

Kindergarten glues the background for their S1A pictures

1st makes a foot print to start their S1A pictures.

2nd grade talks about their community and the artist Heather Galler to create their S1A masterpiece.

4th grade discusses Matisse's paper cut outs in order to understand how they will create their very own paper cut out collage for their S1A pictures.
