Welcome

Welcome to the Brownsville Elementary School art blog. We hope you enjoy exploring the art gallery created by the students in grades Preschool - 5th. The art projects we do with our students allows everyone to experience art through different mediums...

DRAWING

pencils, pens, crayons, markers and colored pencils

~Students start out in the lower grades learning how to draw animals using shapes. Then in the upper grades they learn proportions of the human face and figure. Then they learn how to shade and add value to make their drawings look realistic.

PAINTING

watercolors and tempera paint

~Students start with painting in Kindergarten and build on these skills all throughout elementary school. They learn how to properly use the paints and take care of the brushes.

SCULPTING

clay, wood, wire and found objects

~Clay is a favorite medium in all grades. Each year our clay projects build on each other so that by the time you are in 5th grade you use all the skills to create your sculpture. Kindergarten also uses found object to make faces. Second grade also uses wood to make Kachina Dolls and 4th also uses wire to create wire figures.

PLUS A FEW EXTRAS

print making, weaving and stitchery

~We print in many ways but mostly in 2nd grade, in 3rd grade we love to weave and in 4th (or 5th) we learn stitchery.

All of our students get to be in the studio for 45 mins. a week but they are constantly creating throughout every day.

Artfully yours!
your art teachers, Shannon Horridge and Tetyana Wittkowski

Thank YOU!

Dear BES Families,
Thank you for ordering Square 1 Art this school year. We had 43.26% participation! (a little down from last year but we have grown as school. So I think it is a big success) All items will be arriving the week of December 11th.
Please email me if you would like for your items to be pulled and picked up privately (if it's a gift for the one who made it ;-) or a gift for the teacher) shorridge@k1albemarle.org
If you missed the deadline you may still order but the items will not come to school they would be sent directly to you. You may order anytime for the rest of the year and we will still get a small percentage of the sale.
Thank you again for supporting the BES Art Department!
Fondly, Mrs. Horridge

Art Doesn't Just Happen In the Art Room

Our school is THE BEST! Our classroom teachers believe in being creative and it is not just happening in the art room. Art is happening in the classroom as well! This is such good news. There is no better way to learn and retain information than to have your hands involved in the process.

Projects, Projects, Projects

We are entering the projects that we will use for Square 1 Art. The projects we do for this fund raiser go along with our curriculum and we often use this work in the ACPS Art Show. The children in every grade learn about different artists and their styles, many new techniques and new mediums. This is any exciting time in the BES Art Department.

Well on our way...

into the new school year. Art is being created all over our school and students are sharing a bit of who they are through their art.

These works of art were created in the class room.

Here at Brownsville Art is created everywhere not just in the Art Room!

Welcome Back!

Wow! Another year is about to start and your BES Art Department is excited to see everyone. We are ready for the creativity to begin...
We will start out with an intro to the art room in all classes. Then we will break off to individual grade level lessons. Square 1 Art projects begin after that and then we are well on our way into the new year. Looking forward to teaching your children.
