Welcome

Welcome to the Brownsville Elementary School art blog. We hope you enjoy exploring the art gallery created by the students in grades Preschool - 5th. The art projects we do with our students allows everyone to experience art through different mediums...

DRAWING

pencils, pens, crayons, markers and colored pencils

~Students start out in the lower grades learning how to draw animals using shapes. Then in the upper grades they learn proportions of the human face and figure. Then they learn how to shade and add value to make their drawings look realistic.

PAINTING

watercolors and tempera paint

~Students start with painting in Kindergarten and build on these skills all throughout elementary school. They learn how to properly use the paints and take care of the brushes.

SCULPTING

clay, wood, wire and found objects

~Clay is a favorite medium in all grades. Each year our clay projects build on each other so that by the time you are in 5th grade you use all the skills to create your sculpture. Kindergarten also uses found object to make faces. Second grade also uses wood to make Kachina Dolls and 4th also uses wire to create wire figures.

PLUS A FEW EXTRAS

print making, weaving and stitchery

~We print in many ways but mostly in 2nd grade, in 3rd grade we love to weave and in 4th (or 5th) we learn stitchery.

All of our students get to be in the studio for 45 mins. a week but they are constantly creating throughout every day.

Artfully yours!

And we are off...

What a great way to start the year! We have met with each art class at BES and we are very excited about what's to come. The 1st week is full of introductions and seeing how the art room is organized and prepared to support students in reaching their best artistic abilities. "Do Your Best" is one of my favorite rules we have in the art room. With this in mind we being learning about our first art projects of the 2014-2015 school year.
In Kindergarten and 1st grade we will be using shapes to make a picture. While the 2nd graders learn about folk art and the artist Heather Galler to create a picture that represents their community. 3rd graders get their very own sketch books and begin taking notes on how to draw a self portrait. 4th grade sees a short film on Henri Matisse and begins planning their paper cut outs in their very own sketch books. 5th grade reclaims their sketch books from when they were in the 4th grade and begins taking notes on how to create a radial design using their very own name.
Stop by and see what we are doing with our imaginations.
Stay creative!

Happy August! Can't believe summer is winding down and the hustle and bustle of school is starting up. The BES Art Department is getting excited about the 2014-2015 school year and we hope our students are too.
One of my favorite quotes share with me by one of our very own parents here at Brownsville...

"Art has the role in education of helping children become like themselves instead of more like everyone else."
