Preschool creates birds with natural material and self hardening clay.
In Kindergarten they use their pincher fingers and create a pinch pot which they glaze one color.
1st graders sculpt an animal of some sort. Usually a penguin but we have also been know to create butterflies and fish. They pinch, pull and roll during this construction and they are allowed to glaze them more that one color!
2nd grade makes Egyptian Amulets which goes right along with their studies of Egypt. An Amulet is a small good luck charm that can fit right in their pocket or be worn around their neck. The amulets use a small piece of clay and the students pinch, pull and carve (with clay tools) their clay. They are glazed blue, green or red.
3rd grade learns about Maria Martinez (a Native American potter) vs Greek pottery and looks at the similarities and differences. They learn how to create coils and make a base and put it all together to make a coil pot. They glaze it in the style of either the greek potters or or Maria Martinez.
4th grade makes a clay pocket using the slab technique. They design their pocket on paper then they are taught how to create the slabs and construct the pockets. They glaze it with many colors that work with their design.
5th grade creates a "Gargoyle" they use all the techniques to sculpt these amazing creatures. Then they glaze them.
Clay is so much fun!
